I find it comical that you paint Microsoft in such a favorable light, "providing an open-ended and engaging platform for developers and then making sure they had all the development tools and assistance they needed to be successful". Are you serious?? Only after feeling the pressure of open-source did they release any kind of stronghold on their apps to developers. Referring to them as "open-ended" is a joke.
We are seeing several very good mobile operating systems and platforms emerge (e.g., windows mobile, android, RIM, apple, symbian, etc). This is a great thing for consumers. All of this creates both opportunity and a natural competition in the market. So, in my opinion this is all good and we will enjoy the benefits.
