I was about to buy a URL for a customer Monday when a new tech I brought on last week told me to stop.
I was using Network Solutions to buy the URL after using the service to search for the URL’s availability. My tech told me Network Solutions buys all available URLs that users search for, so they can take the URL off the open market and sell it at a premium disguised as extra services and fees.
I didn’t make the purchase, but sure enough this morning Network Solutions contacts me saying they have secured that URL for me as well as several variations.
Am I being paranoid?
Someone told me the same thing about password strength analyzers. That they are scams. You test your password, it tells you it’s strong, then runs back to your IP address and walks right in.

Hey, you're not paranoid if they really out are to get you. I can't speak for Network Solutions, but in my experience a vast majority of companies that offer domain names will simply snatch up the URL after it's been searched and then sell it to you through a "third party" for an increased fee. The whole domain name biz is a racket, so you have to be careful.
And personally, I NEVER, EVER use a password strength analyzer. I've heard too many horror stories about people getting nailed by scams. My advice is to use common sense and best practices for passwords. You shouldn't ever need a password strength analyzer if you follow basic rules.
