HP Charging Partners For Anti-Bribery Training

Hewlett-Packard is demanding that its global network of 154,000 channel partners pay to complete a regulatory compliance training program by Oct. 31 or risk losing their partner status. Read the full article at Channelweb via http://www.crn.com/it-channel/220300914.

This was a money grab by HP and Integrity Interactive. I paid the $ 120 fee but felt totally ripped off. It offers our company absolutely nothing of value. Shame on HP.

Didn't this previously run under the headline 'Tech Company Raises an Extra $18.5 Mil in Under 30 days'?

Oh yes, now I remember why we (almost) exclusively sell IBM servers.  HP is all about HP.  Channel conflict via Dell-like direct marketing. Now this.  Channel "partner"?  Would you treat your business partner like this?

Keep in mind, HP allows total reimbursement of this fee from their MDF allocations to partners.

I see this as a small price to pay to have HP protect their/our investments and interests and in the long run, this effort is good for all HP partners who run their business honestly and with integrity .

Denalisource...you've made it clear that you're a big HP partner --  good for you.  As one of my college professors used to say "we're a pimple on an elephant's *ss."  We have no MDF to spend. This was money straight out of my pocket and it was absolute nonsense.  If HP is looking to cover its *ss, they should pay for the record-keeping; this burden shouldn't be pushed onto the small business partner who is trying to make a profit in this challenging business climate.  I'll say it again: Shame on HP for doing this.

We are a big HP partner and make no bones about it - we LOVE HP.  But this is a BIG problem because of the PRINCIPAL of the issue - not the amount of money.  HP regularly foists burdensome hoops we must jump through upon us but this is the first time I've ever seen the company actually try to gouge partners to pay for this sort of silly administrative hassle.  Any partner who's sold HP for a while knows that gray market is bad news and doesn't need this sort of silly training to reinforce it.  But if they think it's such a great idea, the LEAST they can do is pay for it themselves, rather than trying to pass the buck to their loyal partners.  HP regularly seems to overlook the value of partners TIME - our most valuable commodity.  The fact that we'd even take the time for this kind of training is investment enough - to have the gall to try and nickle and dime partners to pay for it is absurd and reprehensible on their part.  SHAME ON YOU HP!

BTW: nowhere in this fax did it mention that you can pay for this nonsense with accrued MDF, nor did our partner support team offer up that information.  And if this training is in part, to address the gray market issue, why doesn't HP stop wasting time hassling partners and just get to the bottom of the gray market problem themselves and address the problem where it starts - with HP.  Obviously gray marketers cannot sell new genuine HP products if HP doesn't somehow distribute those products.  I'm sure this is a very complex problem but it's HP's problem, so they need to figure it out, own it and fix it where it starts, by addressing whatever systems and processes allow gray marketers to obtain new HP products at the pricing they get it in the first place.

I received this fax in September and called HP. No one there even knew what it was about. Told me they never send out faxes to anyone at all and would never ask for $120 as a fee to be paid by CC.

I threw it out in the trash. I registered to be an HP partner and never did anything with them so I don't care if I lose my Partner Status. Actually , it might be preferred over having to receive some very fishy looking fax at 2 in the morning. If this is real then it was done in a very poor way. No small business is going to pay $120 to have to comply with this. Especially since their website has no mention of it and no one seems to know what it even is. It's very strange from HP and I am keeping the 2nd fax which came not from Integrity interactive but appears to be from an individual in MA.

I was so sure it was some sort of hoax that I contacted HP. No one there even knew what it was about. No one could respond to me by email on this either.

There was nothing back in September on the partner site about it either. At least not at the ISV partner site and I thought it was a phishing scam or some very poor way of trying to get my $120 dollars. Payable by credit card only??? does that set off a red flag or what!

Sorry but no where on HP's site partner portal can I find anything about this compliance fax . If you email anyone on the portal website you are told to contact the person who sent you the fax. And why can't I find out anything from HP on this by phone. Why is there no one who seems knows what this is at HP.  Please post where I can find this on the HP portal or a real phone number with someone who knows what this is. I logged in as an ISV to that portal and still can't find it if it even exists on the HP site.

I don't think this is a fake.  I went through the "training" (after forking over my $ 120) and all of the steps had the ring of authenticity to them (as mind-numbing as the process was). In addition, after the first round of faxes I received an email from the HP rep who normally contacts us essentially saying "the fax is real. I'm sorry. Don't shoot the messenger."  Strangely, today I  contacted our Marketstar rep who is supposed to guide us through the various PartnerOne benefits and such and she didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I requested MDF reimbursement for the fee.

As for the information appearing on the Partner Portal, when I log in it's on the first page under "What you need fast."  Here it is...

HP Fax on "Legal and Regulatory  Compliance Initiative"

Recently, HP faxed all contracted HP partners information on a new legal and  regulatory compliance program on HP letterhead, signed by Enrique Lores and Jon  Hoak.

This fax will be repeated 2 more times as this is a mandatory requirement

The fax contained instructions for the following mandatory compliance  activities:

  • Completing a short training module on anti-corruption compliance
  • Completing a questionnaire designed to assess compliance risk
  • Reviewing the HP Partner Code of Conduct (indicating understanding and  compliance with its terms)

Additional Information:

  • There is a fee of $120 for this program.
  • Partners with available MDF funds may claim this fee as part of Partner  Training.
  • The Host of this training is Integrity Interactive.

HP strongly believes the benefits of reducing business risk and avoiding  unnecessary costs that can result from non-compliant behaviour are well worth  this investment.

We appreciate your cooperation and encourage prompt completion of these  activities.

Well, I am not an active partner since I have never sold anything of HP's but did sign up years ago.

So I guess I have to find a way to login and then terminate my relationship as a partner with HP officially to stop receiving these faxes. I see that others threw away the fax too from the post here, thinking it was a hoax. That's an active partner too, so I have to wonder why it's not on the main page before login and why employees at HP couldn't direct me to anyone who knew about this.

BTW, the second fax grew in content from the first fax.  It also called the $120 a nominal fee. Nominal for whom?

BTW, it's Dec 31 not October 31 as the final compliance date. Anyway, even if this is real it's not professional. The fax should have had some phone number to call in to from HP with an HP email address so partners can verify that this really came from HP.

Great discussion going on here. Just to clarify, HP told me that the deadline was Oct. 31, but maybe they've extended it, smithy?

Also, I was just contacted by Integrity Interactive, the company that is running the regulatory compliance training for this HP program. Integrity is doing a Web presentation on FCPA today (4:30pm ET) and repeating it at 2pm ET on Thursday and Friday this week. If anyone cares to listen in, the dial-in details are listed below, along with the blurb they sent me.

From Integrity Interactive:

“To have a credible deterrent effect, people have to go to jail.”

That’s what a senior official of the U.S. Department of Justice said publicly on September 11, 2008, when announcing that he expected anti-bribery (FCPA) enforcement to increase in the months ahead.  Who was he addressing?  Leading global companies and their marketing & channel partners.   In other words -- resellers, distributors, and sales agents.

Bribery in the marketing channel is a top-level risk for companies doing business throughout the world.  By paying bribes to win business, re-sellers can land themselves and their partners in serious trouble with law enforcement agencies in the US and abroad.   Enforcement has never been hotter.

Willful ignorance is no defense. Leading global companies are working hard to make sure that their employees and resellers comply with anti-bribery laws and  regulations.

Integrity Interactive Corporation, a leading compliance risk management company, invites you to join a free 30-minute conference call on this subject:

Topic:

What   Resellers Need to Know about Bribery

Date:

Today,   10/7 4:30pm EST

Thursday,   October 8th at 10am, 2pm EST

Friday,   October 9th at 10am, 2pm EST

Dial-In:

8007475150

Pass Code:

3983509

Richard Cellini (SVP, Business & Legal Affairs) and Michael Levin (VP, Partner & Supplier Compliance) will host a conference call covering the following topics:

  • Why channel risk matters.
  • What FCPA is all about.
  • How leading global      companies are responding.
  • What resellers get out of      this.

This webinar is a private and confidential conference call. Attendance is recommended for marketing and channel relationship professionals in large global companies, and leaders of resellers and distributors who partner with those companies.  Participants are invited and expected to pepper the discussion with live emails that will be addressed in real-time during the call (email:  emurphy@i2c.com).
